Dark Chocolate Orange Cake with Orange Glaze

A few days ago, my blogger friend Priya had indicated about her first guest post for Chef Mirelle’s Travel Tuesdays, where she had reviewed the oldest souq in Sharjah. When I was going through the post, it flooded me with innumerable precious memories. Sharjah is literally my home. Apart from a year, I have stayed my whole life in Sharjah. Uppa started and ended his long 38 year career in Sharjah, so it was but natural that we were there. Even though Dubai has all the glitz and glamour and Sharjah can be intimidating at times because of the traffic, narrow roads and slight glitches here and there, the calm life is quite fascinating. Even staying in a town is not a harrowing experience, except for the parking of course. Having moved to a more suburb-like area now, I  truly miss being in the heart of the town. The place she reviewed, the Central Souq, has so many names, including one calling it London Souq! I really don’t know why it got that name, maybe because the majority visitors were foreigners. Every Thursday night, we would walk upto there – uppa never drove! – and then uppa would pray at the adjacent tiny mosque which has a blue dome (it still does!) while we wait out and watch the corniche. Then we would walk inside the whole souq, which has two buildings, one full of gold and the other with all other outlets. We would not buy anything, but simply gawk at all those chunky pieces of jewellery and then stare at the pretty outfits. Uppa would always buy us ice cream and then we would walk back home. We would go there every week and we never complained that we didn’t want to go. Nowadays, kids want us to go to different destinations every weekend! How less fussy our generation used to be… hehe…

Off to the recipe for the day, I dedicate this cake to dear Sona who loves the combination of dark chocolate and orange! Hehe… I saw this cake being baked by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor on his programme in Food Food. In a hurry, I mentioned down the quantities but I was not fully confident. I tried searching for the recipe online but each dark chocolate orange cake had different quantities from mine, though all were his recipes! Finally I decided to try out as per what I had scribbled down, the only addition being is the orange glaze I gave it on the top. What a cake this one was! We finished off half immediately and the other half I wrapped with cling film and froze it for two weeks. And then used it up for a trip. Actually the cake has a very mild orange flavor, but the glaze makes it even more orangy so don’t miss that part! 🙂
