I don’t think I’ve to even say that the first half of the year is gone! Phew… that was too fast!!! In the process, we are growing older… I don’t think I have to focus much on that point, right? ๐ ย OK, so off to the curry that I paired the Neypathal with. There is one book in my kitty that I always run to for “thani” Malabar cooking – “Malabar Muslim Cookery” by Ummi Abdullah. I had ordered this book through Flipkart a few months ago and then had it transported to Dubai through one of our constantly flowing relative-family friend gangs – one advantage of living in Dubai, you see…. Since then, this book has been my go-along for any emergency situation. There is nothing fancy in this book – nothing, in fact. There are no pictures at all, it’s all in black and white and if…
Neypathal/ Neypathiri ~ Deep Fried Rice Puris
Whoever said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, needs a pat on his/ her back. So very true… Some men literally depend on their stomach to love their women, don’t they??? ๐ My D and B are very easy to please – you give them anything, they eat. They don’t even give opinions, which is a tad a bit irritating, especially when you expect them to give feedback for improvements. But then I take it this way – they don’t say anything, means it is fine to their tastes!!! ย But the case of my HD is different. He does not complain, nor does he demand that he needs so and so. That’s the biggest problem. If I ask him about the food, he says it is good, and then just eats one chapathi with the curry or has just one peice of the snack…
Zebra Cake
My eyes are literally burning… as though I have a fire set in… I just had hinted that Rasha’s school is closed now, so you can imagine the chaos at home… Both my imps sleep till 10 in the morning, wake up and start their havoc in the house, again sleep a couple of hours in the afternoon. Sometimes, when I reach home form work, they are still sleeping. Can you imagine the heaviness I feel in my mind?? “Oh Lord, my sleep at night is gone!!”ย And me being a sleep person, my struggle starts at 10 every night. Wash them and dress them up, into the bedroom. A lot of begging, prodding, “kannuruttaling” (rolling my eyes – OK, I don’t know what other word to use for this action!!! Hehe…), shouting, screaming, crying – “please, please, makkale (my kids), ummi wants to sleep…” Doesn’t help at all… Where do…
Erachi Varattiyath | Malabar Beef Roast
I’m on a total mental block. Seriously… I wanted to do this post yesterday but when I opened the draft, my mind went blank. Then I thought, not today then, maybe tomorrow… Now when that “tomorrow” has arrived, I am in the same situation…. Hmmm…. ย Actually, I hate to go directly to the recipe, because I do not favor that style. I like to ramble a lot before I actually get to the point, in real life as well!!! ๐ Part of my nature, you see… It’s starting to get quite hot and humid here, so the summer is very much in. As usual, the A/C in the car never seems to be cool enough and the sun is always too warm. People in the GCC have to be extremely careful in this weather. Keep drinking water, use sunscreen, wear your goggles while out and try to be indoors…
Aloo Tikki/ Potato Cutlets
Aren’t there days when laziness creeps in? I am really passing through that phase. Even though I feel I am relaxed, I actually amn’t. All days seem to be running in a frenzy. Work, home, housework, kids…. then back to the same circle the next day. It’s maddening at the same time scary as well…ย Rasha’s exams are finally over – what a relief! But then the next havoc starts – summer vacations!!! I’ve to now hunt down a summer camp so that she keeps herself busy in the mornings and does not lead my umma onto the walls along with Azza!!! Hehe… Two is REALLY a crowd at my place… I guess that should be the case where there are kids. After all, there should be some noise where kids are there, otherwise what’s the fun?? ๐ ย I guess the recipe I will post today will be perfect fodder…
Egg Puffs
I am terribly missing the rains. I really don’t know why… It’s been almost four years now that I have not seen the monsoon rains. The last three times I have traveled back home has been during the summer times and the feel of the summer rains is different. It just comes in suddenly accompanied with heavy thunder and lightening, and it does rain heavily – but the feeling of monsoon rains will be simply missing. There is something in seeing the clouds rolling over from one end of the sky, the darkness, the breeze, the smell of the sand, the sound of the raindrops, the hot cup of chai and the stretched legs…. Aah… I really want to go home now, just to get that feeling. But I don’t have any hope for this time. ๐ I guess, just to cool myself and show you some glimpses of how…
Kannur Kozhi Biriyani | Kannur Style Chicken Biriyani
I have been featuring in a lot of guests on my blog and that is evident from the number of bloggers that have participated in my “Be My Guest” series. Through a lot of interaction, I have found some good blogger friends, one of which was Aara Sheikh, who blogs at Sweets n Spices. What attracts me to her page is her simplicity, in terms of both content and recipes. As to many other bloggers out there, one thing that really attracted me to her was her honesty to admit her mistake and withdraw from her page a picture that was not hers. Many people would just withdraw and fail to admit that they have done a mistake or they had done it unintentionally. But she had the courage to clear her name and air on a public forum, which takes a lot of courage. I salute you for that,…
Eggless Mango Chocolate Marble Cake
I started off the day seeing this quote, let me share it with all of you: “Everyday seems to be the same, but when you turn back, all days are different and things have changed.” – Anonymous Think about it… Isn’t it so true? Something that we never tend to realize… ย As you are all aware, I am a part of the Home Baker’s Challenge group which is the brainchild of Priya Suresh akka of Priya’s Versatile Recipes. Last month’s challenge was Pizza hosted by Divya’s Culinary Journey, for which I made the Chicken Nuggets Vegetable Pizza and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. ย So when the next challenge came up from Sangeetha Vijay of Spicy Treats, I was so excited. She suggested two versions of a very different marble cake, where instead of the vanilla layer, we make a mango layer, and she gave options that were with…
Kozhi Kurma | Malabar Chicken Kuruma with Coconut Base
Do we all have the lives that we have always wanted? From morning, this question has been dancing in my head… If I take a look at only one example in my life, which is this blog, I would have the answer. It is a clear NO, most of the time. This blog just happened, and now what it has become was something I never fathomed it would be. Similarly, everything in my life has happened like that, some things that I never expected would happened, but nevertheless happened. No wonder why Allah is called “the Best Planner”. Just like the proverb, “Man proposes, God disposes…” ๐ ย Today, Rasha’s exams started. And it started with Science – something that she hates. I asked her, “How was it, molu?” She very innocently replied: “The teacher gave me four sheets, three sheets I’ve done correctly, but the fourth one I know…
Rava Kesari ~ Semolina Sweet
This week has been a reflective week for me, so please expect a lengthy post! ๐ ย Lot of things happened that gave me a lot of insights, Alhamdulillah… The first highlight of the week was that I met a blogger friend for the first time, and that was FamilyCook. Since she loves her pseudonym, I will respect her privacy. I was so glad to be seeing her, it felt like I had met my elder sister. I loved the way she introduced me to her husband. The conversation was like this: He: “So how do you know each other?” She: “We came to know each other when I did a guest post for her blog. You remember that full chicken I had roasted?” He: “Yes…” She: “Yeah, that was the post I had done for her blog, and then we started…” This reminded me of how I presented my…
Breakfast Dosa
Even though I have quite a bit to plug in, I guess I am really not in a mood to put it all down. Maybe I am feeling a bit lagged… hehe… So for me and for all of you, some philosophy here, courtesy “A Peaceful Warrior”… ย Off to the recipe for today – OK, now don’t get shocked by the name!!! ๐ I really don’t know what to call this dosa, which as many of my umma’s foods, features on our breakfast menus on every Sunday without fail. You see that is how much we can predict what we are going to eat when we wake up the next morning!!! ๐ย Eat as is (like I do), with some sugar (like D does) or with some Nutella (like B and Rasha does!!!). ๐ Breakfast Dosa Save Print Prep time 5 mins Cook time 10 mins Total time 15…
Koonthal Roast | Malabar Squid Roast
After doing so many posts, I have realized that I have not posted even a single fish recipe. Not even a single??? Cannot be… But then it’s true… We cook fish at home on a daily basis. Even though fish does not feature on my list for the weekdays as I depend on the previous night’s dinner for my dose of lunch the next day at office, my folks at home need a small piece of fried fish to go with their afternoon meals of rice and curry. At least here we make curries of vegetables, however back home – I mean Kerala-, it’s daily fish curry, either with coconut or without, but not one day passes without fish curry, and that too twice a day – lunch and dinner!!! Darn… ย HD had bought squid with the hope that I would clean it and cook all by myself. I…
