I have loved participating in Home Baker’s Challenge ever since the event has begun. Starting from the pizza, it has been a lovely experience. Barring two challenges, I have been able to participate in all of them and have loved the feeling. I love challenges when they suggest recipes that have been on my to-do list from long and I make them to be able to stash it off from my ever increasing list!!! This month’s challenge is being hosted by the lovely Shazzy from Malaysia, who blogs at “He Chops, She Cooks“. Her blog was previously known as “Cooking with Shazzy” and she has previously guest posted for my blog as well. Being an established home baker in her own way, she hosted a very interesting challenge this month – the Red Velvet cakes and cookies. Now Red Velvet is such a beautiful name for an equally stunning looking…
Tres Leches Cake – Three Milk Mexican Cake
Post number 350, it shows on the right side… Am I excited? Definitely… but am I really excited? I don’t know… there has been times when I have wanted to close down the blog. Another option I have been playing with is to finish off the 60+ drafts for which I had painstakingly taken pictures of and take a break from blogging till I feel that I am ready to come back to it with the same frame of mind that I had started this blog with. I started this blog just like a diary of all sorts – of recipes, of my ups, of my downs, of my thoughts, of my ramblings… and so far, it has been so. The way my life has moved has been so etched to this blog. I have as much as I could, toned down my words, so that only I would understand,…
Chocolate Meringue Cookies – My 50:50 trial
I have always mentioned previously that this blog of mine does not just mention my successes, but illustrates my failures and “part successes” as well, just for me to not lose motivation and keep trying to get better at things next time. Here is one such attempt which I was partially happy about. Making meringue cookies have been something that I have wanted to do for long – yeah, just like many many other recipes!!! I love the soft chewy crunchy layer of addictive sweetness that meringues give. Going on to say that it is one of the healthiest dessert considering the level of fat is quite low in meringues. The main reason why I didn’t want to make it is that I had to ensure that I utilise the egg yolks at the time I am using up the egg whites. So when I had the whites sitting…
Eggless Italian Rose Cake ~ Torta de Rose
It’s been two months since I have participated in the Baking Eggless Challenge. I don’t think I should elaborate the reasons for it, however this month as soon as I saw the recipe, I knew I had to try it. Just like I have mentioned before, yeast is something that I love to play with. So since it was a recipe with yeast, I just had to try it. Just a couple of days back, I posted the Bavarian Dumplings as a part of another challenge and here I am with another yeast bake… hehe… Gayathri challenged us to baking the beautiful looking Italian Rose Cake – please don’t get confused by the name, it is not a cake, but it is a filled yeasted rolls, shaped to look like roses. The link that she provided was this, which was actually lengthy, uses a lot of eggs and sounded…
Bavarian Dampfnudel – Bavarian Sweet Dumpling
This month onwards, I am a part of the International Food Challenge, which is a brain child of Shobana and Sara. I have been watching my other blogger friends participate in their challenges over the last couple of months, and I was particularly enticed by the Iranian challenge that was done by them for March. That was what forced me to take up the challenges, so that I could learn different cuisines and try it out. The challenge for the month of April was German Bavarian Cuisine which is hosted by Sara. Bavaria is part of South Germany and the cuisine is basically rural, with more emphasis on meat and prominent use of flour. To know more about their cuisine, you can refer here. Off the recipes Sara suggested, I decided to try the Bavarian Dampfnudel, which is a steamed yeasted sweet dumpling. It is a steam fried dumpling…
Toasted Coconut Walnut Banana Bread
Wanted to share this beautiful poem, just for reading and enjoying sake… 🙂 It took me two reads to get the whole gyst of it… hehe… just a beautiful way of putting the concept of love… OK, off to another lovely bread that I baked some time ago. Anything with banana, I am always game, but then if it has coconut and walnuts, then I just cannot resist. When I saw this recipe at Shema’s space, I knew I had to try it, as all the flavors mentioned are just what I would have loved. And I was definitely not mistaken. I baked this the night before for breakfast the next day morning and so guilt-lessly gulped into two large slices along with my cup of green tea at office. Shared a part with my colleagues as well, who loved it – yeah, the little bunch who sit…
Spicy Chicken Pizza
There is a strength in these words… In-Sha’-Allah… and what does it mean? “If Allah Wills…” Every Muslim, when he commits to anything, even if it is a small matter, he has to ensure that he gives a commitment from his side along with these words. I know that people jokingly say that these words have a guarantee of six months. That is because of the wide spread misuse of it. If people use these words to let their discomfort or uneasiness known to do things, then they are mistaken. Either we say we do not intend to do it, or say we may or we would, with an “InShaAllah”. Once I learned the strength of these two words, I never fail to use it. First of all, we are committing to the fact that we are powerless in the absence of the Almighty’s support. How many things man…
Eggless Wholewheat Dates Cake
I guess blogging everyday puts such a mental strain, that sometimes I wonder what to put down at the beginning of each blog post. Seriously, I am blogging at such a mad pace only to finish off the amount of drafts I have in my list. You may be wondering, “What’s wrong with her? She has a lot of drafts, so she should relax!” Yes, I wish I could but sometimes when I look at the dates that I have saved certain drafts, it does come with a huge shock to me as to how long it takes for what I have cooked to appear on the blog. For example, the time this cake was baked… never mind, I don’t think I have to dwell on it. It was one of my sneak bakes when D and umma had gone for their medical check ups. When she came back,…
Dulche De Leche Bundt Cake
It is always a pleasure to be writing guest posts to my fellow bloggers. Infact, I love the idea of guest posting as it improves virtual relationships between bloggers and makes it a place for some friendly competition and co-existence. I would like to thank Haffa for considering me to be a part of her little lovely blog! Even though Haffa’s blog is quite young, I love the variety of recipes that she has on her blog. I am a big fan of Pakistani food and love to eat them whenever we are out. I have already bookmarked some recipes to try when I get the chance to, like Sooji Ka Halwa and Chapli Kebabs. I sincerely wish Haffa many many more months and years of successful blogging ahead… After quite a thought, I decided to share this awesome cake that I had prepared as a “thank you” gesture to…
Peanut Butter Cookies
There are times when we wish that Allah would give us answers to the umpteen number of questions that we have in our mind. “Why is it like this when it could have been like that?”, “Why me every time?”… When depression seeps in, it is common for such questions to come up in our mind. What we don’t tend to understand is that – at the same time, many others are being tested in much harsher ways, some asking the same question in their mind while many others enduring it all with patience – a quality which is so beautifully denoted in the Qur’an as “Sabr“. I am not somebody, who can boast of high patience levels. In fact, my patience is something I am very ashamed of. Each time I wish I could really improve my levels. But Alhamdulillah, nowadays through diversifying my energies, I seem to…
Eggless Orange Chocochip Cake
Sometimes, doing intros is not an easy task. I wish I could skip them, but then my mind just does not allow me to be in peace if I don’t do something. So just sharing this with you… to ponder about… Though I agree on everything on the slide, just a little disagreement on the statement which says “learn from your mistakes but never repent”. Yes, learn from our mistakes, we must do, as these mistakes are the ones that will make us more cautious about things that we will do in the future, but regret, we must – if we don’t regret, then we have no conscience present in us… if we don’t regret, then we will tend to fall into the same trap and same mistakes… if we don’t regret, then we automatically forego the important protection that the Almighty promises us… Looks like I have…
Easy Cheesecake Cupcakes
Due to my hectic schedule, I was not intending to cook up anything for the February Home Baker’s Challenge, which is being hosted by Siri of The Brave Cook. She had given a list of Valentine bakes which were really irresistible, but all of them needed some time and patience to make that I was considering not doing it. That is when my eyes fell on this recipe in the list. One Friday, to be precise the Friday when Valentine’s Day fell, I made this as dessert for lunch. Let me do this with a disclaimer that we don’t celebrate this day at all! It just happened that I ended up baking on that day, hehe… Even though it was slightly on the more sweet side with the DDL contributing to the sweetness even more, every body enjoyed it, considering that the portions served were also quite small…
