A quick fix lunch or dinner casserole, with rice, chicken and broccoli, with an extra cheesy layer, baked to perfection… I always classify myself as a “lazy cook”. When readers discover blogs and then go through recipes, they automatically classify the person who writes the blog as “a great cook” or “a chef”. I would never mention myself as such. Give me a chance and I will be more than happy not to cook. I started this blog wanting to tell myself that cooking can be interesting, intriguing and stress releasing, and then this space became a part of my life before I even knew. There is always a constant thought of having to give it content, but Alhamdulillah, by the Almighty’s grace, I have never found it difficult. Somehow, ideas have kept pouring in and experiments have kept working out – not that I don’t have my…
Be My Guest – Nasi Goreng
I don’t know if it is being noticed, but nowadays blogs are on a downward trend. Many aspiring foodies like the platform of Instagram, since it is the most cost effective way of expressing love for cooking and clicking available at the moment. Having a blog can be an expensive proposition, especially when you are not going to earn anything off it. But keeping them on a little space on the world wide web definitely does have a nice feeling to it. 🙂 The reason why I started off with the introduction is mainly because I found our guest for the day through Instagram. Initially, I thought she was only on Instagram, when I figured out that she did have a little blog of her own! Of course, that made me feel that she is different from the recent pack. 🙂 Let me welcome Hasna, who blogs on a…
Dejaaj Mandi | Yemeni Chicken and Rice Mandi
Yemeni style Mandi – an all-time favorite rice dish made with grilled chicken, and simple flavored rice… Aren’t there times when we feel scared to be excited about the days to come? Next week, we have a long holiday, thanks to the National Day holidays. After that, my sister and family will be with us for a couple of days enroute their journey back home. I feel I should also be going home just to catch a glimpse of my family. But thinking about the seven-day quarantine requirement, my mind tells me otherwise. What is the point in going home when you can’t even be in the midst of them and have to be locked up in a room all by yourself? Anyway, I am just trying to breathe and take days as it comes. Having said about breathing, the climate is beautiful these days, with a nip…
Easy Chicken Biriyani
Sometimes I find it extremely difficult to start my posts. Some days, I love the flow but most of the times, my mind acts stuck and slow. I am feeling exactly that way today. Maybe when I am in a position to write more, I may jot in down. It has been more than 13 years since I have had a part of my family living with me, whether it’s my parents, and after that my brother and his family. Very soon, I am going to be without having any of them around – just the four of us. I am somehow feel odd. You get into a literal comfort zone when you have somebody of your family with you, whether it is leaving the kids at home or making meals. Life takes a little of a lazy approach, and I have been that way for a long time…
Easy Fried Rice
One thing about the month of September is the whiff of change it brings along. From really hot days, it slowly starts taking a downward trend and giving cooler mornings and nights. As much as I am no fan of the summers, I get too moody during winters too, so this is the time that I love to enjoy. Somehow, the weather gives a feel-good vibe, even in between the spurts of heat that may pass in. As days pass by, I sincerely hope we get more better news and the negativity in the air goes down. Hope is all we need to live on with life, isn’t it? 🙂 One of the most requested recipe that I have been asked, apart from the Kunafa – which I am yet to make, even though I have a Bread Kunafa recipe on the blog -, is the Fried Rice….
Kayikkante Biriyani | Kayees Style Biriyani
For the last three years, we have been celebrating Eid-ul-Adha back home. “We” means the kids and me. HD would still be here. I was never keen on Eid celebrations back home because the only one that I could remember when I was a kid was extremely boring. As children, we had some of the most amazing memories about Eid over here. The Eidgahs, the stay over at ammayi’s house, all the eating, talking and giggling, etc. made up our Eid celebrations. As we grew up and moved into adulting, it has changed, but Eid is still Eid and we try to see what best we can do. But the last three Eids back home have been really interesting. With going to the Eidgahs in the school grounds, to walking home the long way with all the aunts in slow motion, chatting and enjoying the green views while walking…
Sindhi Murg Biriyani | Sindh Style Chicken Biriyani
It’s been ages since I have done a book review. I haven’t been really in a mood for cooking for a long while now and I am constantly fighting my moods. I am actually trying to protect my drafts by doing more themes and trying new recipes, though to complete those have also been a struggle. As has been the practise for the past two years, I have been slowing down and not posting when I am really not in a mood, because then it seems to reflect on the blog as well. 🙂 This book review has been moved at least four times this year. I started off by scheduling it in January and finally, Alhamdulillah, this month it appears! I am just hoping that this start will put in forth a little push to dig in through my cookbooks and start trying something from them. I am…
Chemmeen Choru – Malabar Prawn Rice
Here is the final recipe for this week’s theme of “Rice Dishes” under the Blogging Marathon #109, after the Pulao and the Egg Biriyani. Malabar has its fair share of one pot rice, just like the pulaos of the North. That is where our Erachi Choru, Kozhi Choru and Meen Choru all belong to. However, considering Malabaris have a little soft corner to prawns, being a delicious shell fish so rarely available, there should be a “chor” which will use only prawns. 😉 I have already stated before that I have a prawn allergy and hence I don’t cook it much, especially if I need to handle it. If it comes shelled, then I may give it a try. There are already few delicious prawn recipes – like this roast and this Thalassery style biriyani – that I make, but I don’t eat, yet the family loves it…
Simple Egg Biriyani | Mutta Biriyani
After the Simple Pulao, here is the second recipe that is going to be a part of the theme “Rice Dishes” for the Blogging Marathon #109. I love posts which have stories, don’t you? 😀 OK, so egg biriyani was one of the first biriyanis I tried when the cooking bug had hit me. I have always mentioned that I never cooked prior to marriage, and even after marriage, it was an adjustment of sorts. HD was quite cooperative and he would cook curries most of the time, which we would simply mop up with store bought khuboos or bread. Once I had Rasha and moved in to stay with my parents, umma was the caretaker for the kitchen and my work didn’t allow me to get involved into the kitchen. Or should I say that it made me so lazy that I would shy away from cooking. Hehe……
Pulao made in Mutton Bone Stock
Time for participating in the two weeks of Blogging Marathon! If there is something I do not want to miss, then it is the interesting themes that Valli comes up with every month to leave us a little bamboozled with choices! Hehe… This month, it is BM #109 and the theme I have selected for these three days for this week is “Rice Dishes”. As Indians, rice is a very important part of our carb eating habits and not even a house doesn’t have their huge stock of rice. Having said that, I do not have a rice loving population in my house. On any given day, we would prefer the chapathi, poori or porotta over the rice. Having grown up in a home where rice is our staple for lunch, there are times when I really want to put up a full platter. My girls are not very…
Lahm Machboos | Majboos ~ Emirati Mutton Rice
I guess it is time to get back to reality after basking in some glory after the Chocolate Mousse Cake. Hehe… This week has been quite busy with guests from HD’s home. My whole schedule has gone for a toss, but for that matter, from November end, nothing has been as per schedule. It is just being twisted and tweaked as per how circumstances are coming and falling in place. But InShaAllah, after they leave on Saturday, I should be able to come back into my routine of everything, especially my workouts, that I am struggling to come back to. I always feel that I eat better the time I workout and vice-versa. I really don’t understand my thought process, when most of the time, it is the way around for many people! So let’s see how it goes… The climate has been kind. It is kind of cozy…
Dejaaj Tahat ~ Emirati Chicken Rice
Sometimes a vacation doesn’t exactly do what you wish for it to do. Yes, for sure, I relaxed as much as I could, so much that we didn’t even go for any long tours, nor did I stay at HD’s place as much as I would have liked to. I visited only those relatives who I had to, and avoided moving around as much as I could. Sometimes, it was boring but that was all I wanted to do. Still, after coming back, it feels like I have been pulled back into a bigger rut than what I had left and gone. But then life is about fighting it out. We just say “Hasbunallahu Wa Ni’mal Wakeel” – “Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).” (Surah Aal Imran:173) and leave everything to Him. Is there any other option? I…
