Samak Koufta ~ Emirati Fish Cakes

It is always nice to come back to my 3-back-to-back series. It has always received a lovely response from all of you, and it keeps me motivated to choose the themes based on the ongoing season as well, Alhamdulillah… 🙂 After all, the major motivation for us bloggers is definitely our enthusiastic readers who come to check out and keep track of what we post, and even trying them out and forwarding us pictures. 🙂 Since it is the holy month of Ramadan and I am taking advantage of it in a beautiful country called UAE, I decided to keep the theme as “Ramadan Specials of the UAE”.

Those who have observed their sawm (fasts) in UAE very well know how the feeling is. The whole country gets a spiritual lift during this blessed month. You can see tents sprouting up everywhere that provide Iftar meals to each and every one, who can’t make it at home or don’t have the time. The best part? You won’t be asked your religion or caste, anybody can join in. 🙂 Office and school timings are shortened, giving time to take rest and concentrate on more good deeds. You will find the whole population literally fasting in the morning, taking good care of the local laws of not eating, drinking or smoking during the morning hours. The prayer filled nights are the best here – you will see almost all mosques running full of worshipers, including the female sections. All and all, the ambiance in this country is truly amazing. My parents have always been coming here to keep a part of their Ramadan, especially the last ten days here, however this time, we are not very sure if they would be coming or not.

The first recipe I am sharing are Emirati fish cakes, recipe adapted from here. It is a very straightforward recipe, spiked up by the Bezaar spice mix. The flavors are mild but very relaxing to the tummy. You can have this as an after-Iftar snack, if you have the habit of having something with your tea, or as a side to your dinner plate. The best part is that it is shallow fried, so it is healthy and after all, fish is considered to be good for your health. Since I found it little bland for my Indian taste buds, I doused it with lots of Salata Hara and had it, and it was delicious! 🙂 Off to the recipe…
