Passion Fruit Limeade

This year while going on vacation, I lunged my camera along with my lenses, thinking that I would learn some freelance photography. After all, Kerala, the state I come from, is blessed with greenery and beauty in every corner. A peep into my phone and you would understand. I hardly have any selfies in it. I was only clicking the coconut palms, the areca nut (adakka) palms, the thick black clouds, the flowers, sometimes every interesting insects and birds I would find… But I absolutely was in no mood to pull out the camera and click, so I allowed my whole set to nestle itself comfortably in the cupboard and ensured that I bring it back with me. Hehe…

Something that I have eaten quite a lot this time was passion fruit. My earliest and only memory about passion fruit was eating it from my elder ammayi’s house. When we used to come during our school vacations, there were a few places that we had to stay compulsory and one was my ammayi’s house. Incidentally, she is now my sister’s mother-in-law, hehe… Talk about inter family marriages! OK, moving off it, they had a decent vine of passion fruits and my first experience wasn’t enthralling. I am not a sour taste fan, so the first spoon of this strange fruit mixed with chilli powder and salt didn’t go well with me and I stayed away from it all this while.

Blogging is what got me interested into trying this fruit. Passion fruit is not something we can find it is supermarket stores here. We do get them at the fruit and vegetable market but we normally don’t go down there as much as I would like to. Even though I would admire recipes that use passion fruit – especially this dessert by Nazeeha – I never got my hands on it as such. During this visit, my relatives would bring in their passion fruit stocks so that the kids and I could eat. The girls wouldn’t even give it a look. Initially, when umma saw that I wasn’t bothered, she would scoop out a couple and eat it with a pinch of salt. It was then my SIL told me that I could eat it mixed with sugar and like a lemonade.

This fruit usually doesn’t have much inside. The gloopy yellow pulp decorated with the bubbly seeds are a pretty sight to the eyes. Some of the fruits are really sour that you could make achaar of it! Hehe… This is one way my younger one loved to have it. She is already a lemonade fan, so the lovely yellow color with the “boba balls” floating in her drink just added to her fancy. Even I enjoyed my passion fruits this way, sometimes not even adding the water into it! You can substitute the water for soda or 7-up for an added kick. You can see my younger one was very excited to pose for the clicks. These were the only clicks are took while back home, so wanted it to be on the blog, before too late… 😉 Off to the simple recipe…
