As much as focusing on our inner balance during the coming holy month, it also becomes imperative that we have good nourishing food to keep us going for the whole day. Nowadays, there is so much emphasis on what to eat and what not to eat. This left me intrigued as to how were the fasts during those days of the Prophet – when there was hardly any food to eat. There is emphasis on two foods – dates and water. Dates is a super-food that nourishes the body and brings it back to its normal state after fasting, without causing any disturbance to the balances. Water is also the same. There is no mention of any other kind of food – they used to eat whatever was available. And we plan and plan on what to cook and eat. I guess we need to reflect on the irony… 🙁

 

There was a time when umma would only make tharikanji for Iftar and we would get bored of it by the time it is half of the month. At that time, oats was not very “famous” as it is now. 😀 Once she discovered oats, then she started alternating with this simple oats kanji. It is nothing but a watery oats drink, made in the lines of making the tharikanji. The advantage of having these drinks is that along with the fruits, it keeps you filled and gives you enough energy to hold on till the Tharaweeh prayers are completed. These times, apart from the tharikanji and this oats kanji, the below also make an appearance on the tables alternatively:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp oats
  • A pinch of cardamom
  • A pinch salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 5-6 cashews broken
  • 5-6 raisins

Instructions

  • Combine the oats and water in a saucepan. Bring to boil, stirring frequently, till the oats get cooked.
  • Add in the cardamom, salt, sugar and milk and mix well, bringing to boil. Switch off the flame.
  • Heat ghee, fry the cashews and raisins. Add into the oats kanji.
  • Serve warm.

  1. Yeah, I knew oats as “elderly people’s food”! LOL My grandparents used to have it and I really thought it is a diabetic peoples food. Oats kanji title misled me, but I am glad I read till the end to know there is ghee and nuts! ;-P
