The climate maybe getting better over here, but sometimes it is really hot especially in the afternoons, that you still need something to cool you down instantly. A tall glass of Kulukki Sarbath always comes handy in this case. Kulukki Sarbath is nothing but a basil seed limeade which is so common in Kerala. Literally, it means “shaken drink”. To read a bit of its history, you can hop onto this link. Though it seems to have originated in Calicut, it has gained more popularity in Kochi. You can find these quite a lot on the streets back home but umma would never allow us to have them since you read all sorts of stories about what kind of water is used – better not dwell around it! With this legendary simple drink taking all sorts of variations now, I resort to making the basic simple edition of lime juice, sugar syrup, basil seeds and a flavoring agent – it can be ginger, pineapple, chilli, mint, etc. either one of them or a mix of it. I make them with crushed ginger as I love the flavor of it more. You can even add a dose of food coloring to make it look more appealing. But I love it simple and without any complications, so here is my version of it… 🙂

Hmmmm.. time to make some and there goes summer! I love monsoon and summer, but winter just makes you feel hungry more often! Dont you think so? 😛 Btw, I never knew this was called Kulukki sarbath! Thank you!
It is called kulukki sarbath because it undergoes a lot of kulukkaling before pouring onto the glass and drinking… 😉 Yes, winters do make me hungry, but still I love winters… 😛 Thanks a lot Fami…
