Jallab ~ Middle Eastern Date Raisin Drink

I am a drink fanatic. I guess many of you must have already got it from the amount of drinks I already have on the blog. I always like to try something new all the time. Last Ramadan, while coming back from a trip, we stopped by the petrol pump to feed the car and as usual, the kids and I walked into the convenience store looking at something we could pick up. Usually I would go for a coffee, but since it was hot, I headed straight towards the chiller section and discovered this tall bottle of brown colored liquid which was labelled “Jallab”. More than the color of the drink, it was the nuts and dry fruits floating in the bottle that attracted me. I can’t express how much I enjoyed that whole bottle without even sharing it with the girls… Hehe… call me a selfish mom! 😉

Naturally, I was on a lookout for replicating it at home. Do you know there are ready-made Jallab syrups that flood the market during this time of the year? I am not really fond of syrup bottles, as if my folks don’t like it, then it just lies in my pantry till it gracefully passes its date. So I didn’t want to take a chance and wanted to make it with home available ingredients.

Jallab is a drink that is very famous in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine. The main ingredients are carob, dates, grape molasses and rose water. To make it easier, it is made now as a combination of grenadine syrup, grape molasses and rose water, and flavored with some incense. I wanted to keep my version of Jallab as close to the original. Definitely, the taste was not hundred percent the same as I had drunk. But I am sure that it was more of a syrup mixed into water rather than made freshly like I did. Definitely, anything made with base ingredients will taste different in a good way.

Instead of using grape molasses, I soaked and ground the raisins till smooth, and then used the remaining ingredients. If you don’t have dates syrup, then soak around 5 dates along with the raisin and grind till smooth. I leave my ground mixture as is, but the best is to pass it through a sieve to have a smooth drink. For the best taste, make it, chill it as much as you can and enjoy it with sprinklings of pine nuts – if you don’t have pine nuts, soaked almonds taste amazing too… Hope you loved the three drinks chosen for the back-to-back series this week, the others being Mohabbat Ka Sharbath and Aam Panna… 🙂
