I discovered this guava chaat when we had gone to visit my cousin’s wife’s parents. She is the one who introduced me to those yummy chicken croquettes. 🙂 We had dinner from there and then her mother bought some huge Vietnamese guavas for us. They weren’t sweet at all, had a thick skin yet soft interior. We weren’t really keen in eating them. Sensing our dislike, her mother immediately took it back, chopped it into pieces and bought it back to our tables with all those sprinklings. Sensing it was red chilli powder on top, I was a bit hesitant. She pestered us to try. The first bite, and oh my goodness! I can’t explain the plethora of flavors that danced in my tongue! Actually, we ended up gobbling down that whole plate shamelessly. 😀
This is the time when the market gets filled with the large guavas. The Egyptian ones we get are quite sweet and taste similar to the ones that we get back home, but these Vietnamese ones are green on top, so hard to bite that they literally give your teeth a run. Just make sure that the guavas are in the half way stage, ie. half ripe and half raw. The sprinkling is the highlight – so simple, yet a riot of flavors in the mouth. I have tried with little chaat masala also, but I love it this way more. Do try for your Iftar snack or as your after dinner snack. If you like a little zing in your fruits, then you may enjoy the Fruit Chaat too. Off to the recipe…
I love the aroma of guava, and I remember I had lots of them as a kid…miss this aromatic fruit.
Thank you so much Angie…
All my childhood days will include this and gooseberries…. some salt and chilli mixed in a bowl our home grown perakka and nelika 🤤🤤🤤🤤 The same goes with mini oranges… or mandarins as known now to me… 😆 cut the orange horizontally and dip it on a plate of salt and red chilli and squeeze and have… omg i am salivating… thank god not fasting yet 😂
I have never eaten guavas this way till I tried from their house… Thank you so much for gracing my space after a very long time… 😛

Thank you so much Sujata…
Your relative just did the right thing. Every guava seller on carts in Mumbai has the mandatory salt + red chilli powder combination in a small bag with a knife to be dipped and applied on the guavas. Yes, even on the sweet guavas and it tastes so delicious. During school this was our most fav snack for a rupee and we would wait for the bell to ring and rush out to eat this! The dish may be simple, but memories associated with it are immense.
Ah… what memories! Thank you so much Vidya for sharing it over here…

You opened a floodgate of memories for me – simple sweet and spicy childhood memories, just like this chaat. My father always served amrood like this. The sweet tart flavours meld so well with the meaty pulp. Thank you for this lovely reminder. 😊
Thank you so much Maria… 🙂
We had a guava tree in our yard back in India and in the season we used to pluck them and eat with red chilli and black salt. This is one sinful way to eat guavas.
Thank you so much Sapana…
