Shrikhand ~ Hung Curd Dessert

I have a soft corner for Shrikhand – period! Give me some thick curd sweetened and spiced with my favorite cardamom and I turn into a little kid, excited about it! I have already posted a few variants on the blog before: Aamrakhand/ Mango Shrikand Saffron Shrikand  Nutella Shrikand Papaya Shrikand I felt a bit guilty looking at this list. Where is the plain shrikhand? The plain goodness, with absolutely no additives of any fruit or other flavorings?   Shrikhand is basically a  Gujrati and Maharashtrian delight, served as a stand alone dessert or along with pooris. For us South Indians, pooris are always with a potato bhaji, so having it with something sweet was not a matter I could digest. But once I tried the combination, I was hooked – it is delicious! You must try it to know how it would be. There is a combination of…

Papaya Halwa ~ Indian Papaya Sweet

I have been on an awfully low spiritual phase and that seems to be reflecting on the blog as well. I have always felt that when your heart and soul struggles to manage the turns and curves of life, you tend to find solace in the comforting words of the Lord. As life settles and things become much more streamlined, man tends to go back to his selfish ways. We forget the bad days and enjoy the good days as if nothing ever happened in our life. As our Creator, He knows how man is and that very well is explained in these verses: “And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him [alone]; then when He bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before, and he attributes to Allah equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say,…

Kheer ~ Indian Rice Pudding

We are having a long weekend in this part of the world. The government departments and schools reopen only by next Sunday, so that’s 9 long days, though I, like many working in the private sector, go back to work on Wednesday. Since it’s just two days, I don’t think many would mind it. 🙂 Since holidays are very rare here, everybody looks forward to them, to plan their travel trips. Many go home, many go for a quick vacation, and many more enjoy staycations over here itself. With the climate getting slightly better, everybody is looking at taking maximum advantage of these days. From my side, we have no plans. Somehow I feel that’s also good. Yesterday was super boring. The kids and I were at home. Though I planned to finish up the laundry, we ended up watching long hours of Food Network and then finally slept…

Chakkakuru Unda ~ Jackfruit Seeds Sweet

This weekend, we took the time to complete off our Ramadan grocery shopping. Though not much, it is still a task in itself. During the month, normally our visits to the supermarkets go to the minimum since there will be hardly time to adjust in between. As we picked up what was required and was waiting at the counter, the family in front of us had already put in their groceries on the till and were waiting for their bill. They stood in the line with the trolley, then a pram, and the ladies of the family (a mother and a daughter) behind it. Their billing was already done, the grocery was packed, the gentleman was paying the bill, yet nobody took care to move a bit ahead to put the grocery back into the trolley and make way for the others in the queue, since there were already…

Chukandar Halwa ~ Beetroot Milk Sweet

Some people come and go in your life and are not meant to be there, even if it is your wish. How much ever you try to cling to them, they will slide off through the middle of your fingers when the time comes. There are two ways of taking it – either buckle up under the pressure of losing them or taking the matter in your own stride and moving on. There were times when I used to wonder, why do people leave and go, and what did I do wrong that they had to leave me and go. I guess, with passage of time, age and experiences, we tend to see each and every happening in your life on a much larger perspective and give it a holistic look, rather than only from your shoes. This learning does not happen overnight – it takes its own time to…

Papaya Shrikand ~ Papaya Yogurt Sweet

I just wrote the other day about the upsurge of fruity desserts on the blog, and here I am with another one! 😉   I have mentioned before that papaya is one of my favorite fruits. I would devour every bit of the papaya that my mattamma would bring from her yard. I was just going through the papaya recipes on the blog and everything seems to be a drink! Hehe… Would you love to browse through them?   Papaya Milkshake Papaya Orange Juice Papaya Lassi Papaya Banana Smoothie     Regular readers would also know how much I love yogurt. I always have a litre of yogurt sitting in the fridge at any given point of time. It sneaks into anything I make, especially my desserts! I love to add it to my smoothies, to my bakes and if I don’t do anything with it, I simply mix…

Chocolate Falooda

Last time while on vacation, on our way back home after a visit to the then-new Hi Lite mall on the NH Bypass Calicut, we stopped by an eatery just at entering Tirur town. The big restaurant had put up banners about their falooda and from the crowd inside the restaurant, we noticed that majority of them were dropping in just to have it. Seeing that, my sister and I had already decided that we would order it after having our dinner. So when the time came, we asked them for their normal falooda and “Black Beauty Falooda”. Yes, the name was really intriguing, we wanted to see what it was. In a tall glass, it was chocolate overload. The milk used had chocolate, there were bites of chocolate chips, with intermittent bites of crunchy cornflakes, dry fruits and nuts along with the large scoop of vanilla icecream,…

Pineapple Rava Kesari

As human beings, we need constant reminders. Reminders that we are mortal, unable to control a lot of things by ourselves. At times, don’t we feel frustrated that we can’t do things by ourselves? I was reading through this status of Sister Yasmin Mogahed (yes, I seriously love her for the sake of Allah!) and there was this particular comment, which couldn’t be so true!   Melody Ransom Just had an interesting conversation with friends last weekend about how we are all control freaks. We want to be like Allah in saying “Be” and it is. We want things to go our way on our terms and when it doesn’t we feel damaged. If we think we can control outcomes, that will destroy us but if we let go and submit to the way Allah is unfolding our destiny, whether we like/understand it or not then we start to…

Qubbani Ka Meetha (Hyderabadi Apricot Sweet) – Guest post for “My Life in Yanbu”

Just like figs, apricot is my new in-thing. I have it in my pantry all the time, though I don’t have it as much as I have figs. 🙂 For a few days, I was dreaming of having Qubbani Ka Meetha, even though in my life, I have never had this sweet! Sounds strange? It would, to all of you, but I am sure that food bloggers and food lovers would agree to me regarding this. I guess watching too many food photos everyday makes me dream about food, food and more food. At times, I also feel that it is one cause of me not losing weight so easily! 😉   So that is how my making of Qubbani ka Meetha happened. When Famidha wrote to me for a guest post for her first blog anniversary, I had to give her a sweet definitely for a sweet occassion…

Aloo (Potato) Jamuns

As soon as the Eid holidays got over, I promised myself I would start eating “clean”. Unfortunately the “clean” eating has not been that clean on and off. Sometimes, I feel so hyped up that I just hold myself from chocolates or any sweets, but then B just spoiled all the fun by bringing three big boxes of chocolates from his latest trip to Budapest. I didn’t know whether to be happy or feel irritated with him, but knowing him how hard he finds to bring gifts, I was happy that he thought about me and kids on the trip. As of now, I managed to finish off two boxes of individual chocolates by distributing around and should I also say, that I distributed some to myself. 😉 One more box of chocolates of 100 gm bars each still have more than a year towards its expiry date so…

Coconut Paneer Burfi

Ah… one of those days! Today happens to be my parent’s 35th anniversary. Last year, they were with my sister in the States during this time and the year before, I baked them my first dicey Black Forest Cake as a surprise. I tried calling umma today, but she didn’t answer the phone. My sister jokingly said that they must be celebrating. Hehe… Days as such have never been important in our home. It was just a normal day that would go by. For that matter, even I do the same. I don’t give much importance to birthdays or our anniversary though I still would bake or cook something special and buy gifts just to make them feel nice. But just because I don’t want them to give too much importance to those days, I buy gifts and bake special on otherwise mundane days as well. It is imprinted…

Be My Guest – Carrot Halwa

After having done three guest posts last month, it is back to having one guest post from this month! Hehe…   We are in the month of Dhul-Hijja and InShaAllah, the day of Arafah is on Wednesday this year. Though this year’s Hajj is marred by a very sad crane accident at the Haram – may Allah grant Jannah to those who were martyred during the incident, Aameen… – I am sure with the feel that being at the Haram gives, all the people who have gathered there will be in full spirits to please the Lord. May Allah accept their Hajj and also give us the opportunity to fulfil this obligation soon… Aameen…   Today, I have with me a new blogger who is making waves in the blogging world within the short time that she has been around. I must admit that newer bloggers are more advanced in…

Gajar Ka Halwa/ Carrot Halwa ~ Microwave Method

The other day, I was just thinking to myself… being a working mother makes me miss a lot of little joys in life. It is not that I am not enjoying my current life. I do love being super busy and having no time on hand, which gives me hardly any free time to think about anything but at times I crave for some leisure time. The time when the kids and the HD is off to their respective morning places and I could sit in the hall with my big mug filled with hot chai, slowly sipping on them and thinking about sweet nothings… Eagerly awaiting the kids’ warm hugs and kisses when they come back from school… Serving them lunch and putting them off to nap… Being with them when they are at home… In fact, I miss that time. My girls are growing up so fast that…

Badusha/ Balushahi

Last month, when I started my first challenge under the Sweet Fantasy Club, I had mentioned how making Indian sweets worries me. The challenge last month, which was the Basundi was not very hard to concur but this time what was given was something that made my knee jerk. Badusha or Balushahi, which is basically Indian style doughnuts dunked into rich sugar syrup, is something that we always enjoy buying from out and enjoying. In fact, I never knew that this sweet, what we call as “neyvada” in our place, had a nice official name! Ahem… Talk about things that blogging teaches you. Each time we go home, we come back with a big box of these beauties and enjoy them in small doses daily till the box is complete. While typing this, I am literally drooling… hehe…   When Preeti gave the challenge for the month, I kept searching…

Be My Guest – Sakkarai Pongal/ Sweet Pongal

Time for the new guest. One of my favorite bloggers to say, I always eagerly wait for her posts because even a simple Apple Milkshake just looks amazing. When I praise her photography, she keeps saying that what she does is very minimal but anybody who goes on and checks out her blog will surely agree that this young blogger is improving in her food pictures on a post by post basis!   Today, I have with me Sona, who blogs at “Spill the Spices“. Hers is a vegetarian blogs with a variety of Keralite and Tamilian delicacies and some delicious bakes as well. I chat with her on and off, however off late, we have been chatting once a week and I really enjoy my conversations with her. She makes me feel as though I am having a conversation with a younger sister. Even though I had requested her…
