Erachi Pola ~ Malabar Chicken Cake

19- Erachi PolaPin

It is good to see that the world wants to know more about the beautiful month of Ramadan, especially during a time when Islam is being battered more by its own people than by others, Naoozubillah – May Allah protect us and keep us safe, Aameen… How else would you explain this article that appeared in The Kitchn last week or this one on Huffington Post? 🙂 It is easier to understand the month when you are staying in an Arab country, since everywhere here it is filled with the “feel” of the month. You are already updated on what not to do, and what you can do. However, when you live in a country where Muslims are in minority, it is a source of amazement as to how we can go hungry the whole day. Even here, my non-Muslim friends and colleagues keep asking me. Yes, it is not easy, especially when it is blazing hot outside, but it just happens because we do it for Him, as simple as that. For every good deed, the blessings are defined, but for Ramadan, it is not. Allah has said, “Every act of a person is for himself, but fasting is for Me, and I will reward him for it.” (Sahih Bukhari). May Allah make it easy for all of us and bless us to make the most of what we can during this holy month… Aameen…

As I have been indicating, another easy snack recipe it is for today. Pola is Malabar style cake loaded with eggs, which is mostly sweet. The only pola I seemed to have posted till date is this Kaipola, definitely another easy snack recipe! InShaAllah, I have a couple of pola recipes waiting in my drafts, which will slowly appear but since now I am off eggs, I am trying not to make any too. 🙁 OK, coming to the recipe, the first time I had pola with chicken was at my ammayi’s house. Her DIL (the one who introduced me to the croquettes!) had made this for Iftar. And it sounded really simple! Since she had no measurements – I am seriously surprised to see somebody who cooks like that these days! 🙂 – I took help of Googlemaa to go through whatever was available online and made up my own version. This is just so easy to make! And delicious too… You can very well replace the chicken with a meat of your choice, even mince too! Off to the recipe…

  1. Ah! the legendry pola! :-p I stir away from making these as we are just two and it is no good unless at least 2 to 4 eggs is going in it. But when served at any iftar party at home, both sweet or savoury – my hands pick them up first! 😛 Your erachi pola looks so well done and perfectly cut! Look who cooking Malabar dish! 😛 Always makes me wonder why I being from Malabar am not keen in cooking them! 🙁 Guess husbands choice dominates our cooking style.. May be I should try and make an individual serving size 😛

When we were alone, we used to make them in small fry pans with 3 eggs, just enough to cut into half and enjoy… but not this one, the sweet ones… I have seen my family seems to be loving our type of food so want to concentrate more on it… 🙂 Thanks a lot Fami…

    How interesting!
That’s like what the British would call a savory pudding or we Americans would call a bread pudding. Although we would bake it instead of cooking it atop the stove.
    Ramadan Mubarak!

It can be Bibi… Malabar had a lot of British and Arab influences, which side is first is not sure… All our bakes are on stove top! Thanks a lot dear…
